Customer service is key to Top Tubes success; an important part of this is our distribution capability. Producing superb quality tube is essential but if product is not delivered on time and in excellent condition the company’s reputation suffers. “Reactive is the word I use to describe our approach to customers” says Jason Mullender, Transport Manager at Top Tubes for the past eighteen months. “We work with our customers to understand and satisfy their needs and by maximising our flexibility”.

Top Tubes offers next day delivery on most product and same day is possible depending on the time the order is placed and the distance it has to travel. “We like to think that our delivery is as good as that of Amazon and other online companies” says Jason. “Road and traffic conditions today don’t make driving easy, and maintaining a tight schedule with a 32 ton artic can be very demanding”.

Transport and warehouse management is a complex business and much knowledge and experience is required. From awareness of stock levels and stock locations, which vehicle is best for certain loads, most efficient routes and specific customer delivery requirements.

Jason speaks highly of the delivery drivers in his team. All are skilled and experienced with a particular knowledge of the tube industry. They take pride in the cleanliness and smartness of their vehicles. And with the company’s fleet now bearing the distinctive Top Tubes livery – a move instigated by Jason himself – the vehicles and their drivers are worthy ambassadors for the company throughout the UK.

“Top Tubes is a great company to work for” says Jason, “and we really do work as a team. Challenges happen on a daily basis but we all pull together to sort them out and keep our customers happy”.

Metallex increases momentum

Six months into the Metallex division’s expansion plan, which has seen the rehousing of its sales office at the Top Tubes main Wednesbury site, the initiative is being hailed as a great success.

Luke Strong, moving from laser sales to overall divisional head of Metallex and Laser Products, credits much of this success to the improved and increased customer liaison following the relocation.

Being in-house, the sales team can now be more responsive and more reactive to its customers. On their part, customers appreciate this closer link between sales and production, and the benefits it brings, making for much increased customer contact.

The installation late in 2016 of a new dual-faced tube slotting machine - another step in the expansion project - has further increased sales. “The multi benefits provided by the new kit have meant we’ve been able to approach new markets and increase our customer base”, says Luke.

Slotted tube manufacture, especially that for the retail sector, is a demanding and fast changing industry, often driven by changing fashions, so expansion and restructuring of the division continues apace. “With the converging of slotting, laser, bending and manipulation and fabrication” says Top Tubes MD Adam Bradley, “the division will look different again in twelve months time than it does now”.

Apprentice of the Year 2016 winner Jack Bate has joined Top Tubes’ ERW Sales Team. Jack, who won his award for his work with ‘Performance through People’, has been appointed a Sales Account Manager focusing on the established replacement exhaust sector as well as developing new sales across all markets.

“Top Tubes is a very stimulating company”, says Jack, “with a number of exciting projects under way and on the horizon. Joining them has been educational and challenging and it is just the sort of company I want to develop my future with”.

Having just completed his HNC in business management, Jack is busy working to complete his HND next year. When not studying he enjoys socialising and travelling and is a keen Aston Villa supporter.

“The sales team is very close and great to work with”, says Jack ”and I feel that I’m learning a lot and really moving forward.”

“Jack’s enthusiasm and dynamic approach have been evident from day one”, says Craig Gibbs, ERW Sales Team Manager. “He’s already an integral part of our sales team and will benefit Top Tubes ERW division greatly”.
