MAGNAtube® makes its debut

New magnesium/aluminium/zinc coated tube from Top Tubes sets new standards in corrosion-resistance and durability.

Promising a service life of up to 20 times that of pre- or post-galvanised tube – and attested to by one of the UK’s leading test houses – MAGNAtube® is little short of revolutionary. We’ll be covering MAGNAtube® and its many ground-breaking benefits in a special newsletter next month, but in the meantime please contact us if you’d like further details right now.

Top Tubes in anti-corrosion steel joint marketing initiative

Top Tubes has taken another major step forward by entering into a ground breaking supply agreement with Korean steel producer POSCO with the aim of working together to seek UK markets for POSCO’s PosMAC magnesium/aluminium/zinc corrosion-resistant steel.

PosMAC is at the heart of Top Tubes’ revolutionary MAGNAtube® corrosion-resistant tube, which promises a service life far in excess of that of conventional galvanised tube.

The agreement was signed on October 12th 2017 at a special ceremony at POSCO Center in Korean capital Seoul, attended by Top Tubes MD Adam Bradley, Byeong-ryong Suh, Posco’s Head of Construction Steel Materials Sales Group and Chae-il Lim, Head of Hot Rolling 1, Posco Daewoo, amongst others.

The collaboration between the two companies started in 2012 when Posco began supplying Top Tubes with sample material for tests and verification purposes. Posco had for some time been developing corrosion-resistant materials specifically suited to the wet and salty UK climate.

Following extensive salt spray testing carried out for Top Tubes by Rotech Laboratories, one of the UK’s leading test houses, MAGNAtube® was launched in June of this year.

Adam Bradley said at the signing event, “We have the utmost confidence in PosMAC following a whole host of verification processes. We also expect that MAGNAtube®, the premium pipe using PosMAC, will prove to be a strategic product shaping our future.”

POSCO plans to accelerate access to the European market by continuing with a consistent cooperative relationship – such as providing technical solutions – with Top Tubes, the first purchaser of PosMAC in Europe.

New in-house testing facility replicates the test of time
New in-house salt spray testing facility

Quality Manager Tony Roberts examines MAGNAtube® sample in the new facility

Underlining our commitment to both our revolutionary MAGNAtube® corrosion-resistant coated tube and to PosMAC steel strip (see story above), is the installation of a new in-house salt spray testing facility here at Top Tubes.

The new facility will not only prove invaluable in the development and manufacture of MAGNAtube® but will also serve as a very practical demonstration to customers of MAGNAtube’s and PosMAC’s superiority over conventional coated tube and strip, enabling customers to see for themselves the greatly accelerated effects of time on these products. In the case of palisade fencing, for instance, customers will be able to witness how MAGNAtube’s Simonkolleite layer actually spreads over the previously uncoated cut ends of the section, providing 100% anti-corrosion coverage.

The testing process itself simulates the ravages of time – compressed into months rather than decades – by spraying a carefully controlled fine mist of softened water and calibrated salt onto samples of tube and strip resting within a heated cabinet, replicating a variety of damp, humid conditions found in real world situations.

Top Tubes’ structured approach to continual improvement pays dividends

ISO9001 & ISO14001 2015 certification

Top Tubes has been developing its integrated Quality and Environmental Management System (QEMS) over the last 18 months with the ultimate goal of achieving the 2015 version of the certification standards BS EN ISO9001 and 14001.

A lot of work has gone into the preparation for this transition and following an exacting four day audit carried out by ACS Registrars Top Tubes are proud to announce that we have achieved ISO9001 & ISO14001 2015 certification. We are now one of the first companies in our market sector to have a QEMS suitable and robust enough to satisfy the exacting requirements of these revised standards.

One beneficial outcome of this work was a review of how we record personnel records regarding assessment of competency. The previously used system has been considerably updated to improve recording of company inductions, training records and appraisals. Departmental Managers have now been given a better system to improve their leadership and allow them to assess, realise, plan and release the potential in their team. Going forward, this work will continue as the company continually looks to raise the skills of all members of its team. The company is also currently in discussion with local education facilities regarding the development of apprenticeships.

Top Tubes has a structured approach to continual improvement throughout every aspect of its operations. An indication of this culture is the fact that the cut off point for the 2015 system certification isn’t until September 18th 2018 and Top Tubes has achieved it already.
